Call for Submissions

The International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science, HOPOS, welcomes proposals for papers, symposia, and posters to be presented at its thirteenth biennial congress, which will take place 23 to 26 June 2020 at Lingnan University, Hong Kong.  The two keynote speakers for HOPOS 2020 are Sean Hsiang-lin Lei (Academia Sinica, Taiwan) and Christina Thomsen Thörnqvist (University of Gothenburg, Sweden).

HOPOS is devoted to promoting serious, scholarly research on the history of the philosophy of science. We construe this subject broadly, to include topics in the history of related disciplines and in all historical periods, studied through diverse methodologies. HOPOS 2020 is thus open to scholarly work on the history of philosophy of science from any disciplinary perspective. To encourage scholarly exchange that speaks to the cultural and temporal reach of HOPOS, the HOPOS 2020 Program Committee especially encourages submissions that take up philosophical themes that cross different cultures and time periods.

The conference language is English.

The deadline for submissions is 15 September 2019.

We anticipate that notifications will be sent to submitters by 15 December 2019, and that the complete congress program will be publicized in early February 2020.

**FROM THE HOPOS STEERING COMMITTEE (SEPT. 1, 2019)**

The HOPOS Steering Committee remains in close communication with the members of the Local Organizing Committee at Lingnan University about HOPOS 2020 and the general circumstances in Hong Kong.  The situation is especially complicated, and we are grateful to our colleagues at Lingnan, especially Darrell Rowbottom and Jiji Zhang, for their perspective and their understanding over the last several weeks, as we have tried to sort out how to proceed.

At this time, we are moving forward with the congress as planned, and will continue to consider the possibility of changing arrangements for HOPOS 2020.  Given the general uncertainty about how conditions might develop, we have, with the support of our colleagues at Lingnan, secured one alternate host (in the United States) that could accommodate the congress from 23 to 26 June 2020.  At minimum, we will consider the possibility of relocating the congress to this alternate site based on the number of submissions received by the 15 September 2019 deadline.  If a decision to relocate is made at that point, we will make an announcement as soon as possible, and also extend the submission deadline for HOPOS 2020 as appropriate.

In general, should any conditions develop that a change to our current plans for HOPOS 2020 becomes necessary, we will distribute announcements as swiftly as possible.
